Professor Roberto Markarian, Armenian by origin, has been appointed rector of University of the Republic, Uruguay's public university.
The 67-year-old mathematician, who is the author of numerous research papers, will be a rector until 2018. His daughter Vania Markarian is a historian studying the Armenian Genocide issue, while his brother Sergio Makarian is a football coach.
