YEREVAN. – Armenia’s opposition MP, former FM Alexander Arzumanyan is confident that the Armenian authorities will not permit the setting up of a customs checkpoint on the Armenia-Karabakh border.

Arzumanyan ruled out such a development at a press conference on Wednesday.

“This would be suicide, especially since we will never accept that Karabakh will be part of Azerbaijan. We must see to that this [situation] does not cause nervousness among our associates,” Arzumanyan added.

The treaty on the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU) was signed, in the Kazakh capital city Astana on May 29, and by the leaders of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. In addition, Armenia President Serzh Sargsyan participated in the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and offered to sign a treaty on Armenia’s Union accession.

In response, however, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev spoke about the letter by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, and on calling to accept Armenia into the Eurasian Union only within the limits of the country’s internationally recognized borders, and not including Nagorno-Karabakh. But Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, disregarded this letter and stressed the need to sign all documents with Armenia in the shortest period of time. Numerous analysts, however, believe that Armenia is not yet a Eurasian Economic Union member because Russia has put forth a condition of setting up a customs checkpoint.
