YEREVAN. – A technical conference on the safe operation of Armenia’s nuclear power plant, and with regard to the coordination of the respective international assistance being provided, is held in capital city Yerevan, from Wednesday to Thursday.

Foreign experts also are participating at the event.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Yervand Zakharyan delivered welcoming remarks.

“All participating countries greatly contributed to the technical maintenance of the [plant’s] operating unit. There are significant achievements in this domain, but there are still things to do,” the minister specifically noted.

Zakharyan also informed that an agreement was reached with Russia’s Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, and concerning the inclusion—into the program to extend the lifetime of the operating unit—of several measures to raise the plant’s safety level.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) representative Miroslav Lipar also delivered welcoming remarks at the conference.

“A serious funding may be needed to modernize Armenia’s nuclear power plant, and this requires assistance from the participating countries,” Lipar said, in particular.
