The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) supports the OSCE Minsk Group format and a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. 

Willian (Bill) Lahue, the NATO Liaison Officer for the South Caucasus Region, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Lahue stated the abovementioned in response to the query on whether Azerbaijan attempted, during the recent NATO summit in Wales, to raise the issue of a need to change the OSCE Minsk Group format.

As per the NATO official, however, that is Azerbaijan’s position.

“The Minsk Group is the sole format and the only existing proposal which is aimed at the settlement of the [Karabakh] conflict. So, NATO looks toward the OSCE Minsk Group to continue its work,” Lahue noted.     

He also stressed that unless the parties to the conflict decide to initiate something else, this is what NATO supports.

“It should be recalled that NATO’s mission is not the settlement of problems; it’s a defense organization. It cooperates with other international organizations which participate in the processes of problem settlement,” added the NATO Liaison Officer for the South Caucasus Region. 

He reiterated that even though Azerbaijan has its own position on this, no alternative is found to the OSCE Minsk Group to this day.
