YEREVAN. - President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan received on Monday the Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Nikolay Bordyuzha, Armenian News - NEWS.am reports.
President Sargsyan welcomed the Secretary General Bordyuzha, whose visit to Armenia is related to the recent escalation of tensions observed at the borders of the CSTO member states, including the tensions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in August and escalation in contact line between Karabakh and Azerbaijan. Serzh Sargsyan added that, unfortunately, the Azerbaijani side’s provocative actions undermine the fragile security in the CSTO responsibility zone. Furthermore, Armenian president stressed that Azerbaijan’s constant attempts to break the cease-fire oppose the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group aimed at the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh issue.
The President of Armenia noted that the position of some partners within CSTO, expressed in various international forums concerning Nagorno-Karabakh, does not meet the spirit of the peace process, contradicts the recommendations of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs, and goes against the philosophy of documents signed in the framework of the CSTO.
The bellicose, xenophobic and anti-Armenian statements of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev should have appropriate response by the CSTO partners of Armenia, in which case, says Serzh Sargsyan, Azerbaijani leader’s dangerous ambitions would be restrained.
According to the President Sargsyan, as a result of the CSTO’s silence, Azerbaijan continues to increase tension and take provocative actions in violation of its own commitment to the peaceful settlement in the framework of international law.
The secretary general of CSTO replied that the escalation of tension in Armenian-Azerbaijani border is among most important issues for the Collective Security Treaty Organization and will be further discussed during the next CSTO session.
