The Armenian-Turkish border may be open temporarily before the Karabakh conflict is resolved, Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper reported on July 26 referring to Turkish press. According to the source, this might happen on 11-17 September, when Armenia will host NATO exercise.

The field exercise will be based on the fictitious scenario of an earthquake in Armenia. Under the scenario, NATO forces will come to the rescue. In this period, Turkey might allow cargo transit to Armenia through its territory.

If necessary, Turkey will open the border for the exercise to provide its territory for access of the military equipment, in particular in the province of Kars (north-east of Turkey). The governor of the province confirmed the information in one of the articles, the newspaper says. Temporary opening of the border, closed 15 years ago, will hardly affect the suspended Armenian-Turkish reconciliation process but can become an encouraging move, the Russian daily writes referring to Turkish press.

As NEWS.am reported earlier, Armenia 2010 exercises will be conducted in Kotayk region of Armenia on September 11-17.

Earlier Turkish press spread information on border opening, referring to Kars Governor. 

However, speaking in Almaty Turkish FM Ahmet Davutoglu stated that the country does not intend to open the border even temporarily. Now Turkish media seems to raise the question once again.
