YEREVAN. - Armenia's President Serzh Sargsyan today received PACE co-rapporteurs Axel Fischer and Alan Meale.

Stressing the already traditional character of these meetings, Sargsyan said they enable to discuss the multi-sector cooperation between Armenia and Council of Europe (CoE), as well as refer to the issues, including those regarding Armenia, which are on the PACE agenda.    

Sargsyan said he is familiar with the PACE co-rapporteurs’ report published during their previous visit and welcomed the fact that it reflected Armenia’s commitment to carry out continuous reforms in the areas of human rights, democracy and rule of law.

Armenia's president highly appreciated Armenia’s cooperation with its international partners, including the CoE, stressing the latter’s important contribution to Armenia’s democratization. The president noted the constituency of the reforms carried out in Armenia in recent years with the view of deepening the principles of democratization, human rights protection and legal state.  

PACE co-rapporteurs thanked the president for the reception and said that within the framework of the visit they had a number of other meetings with different politicians, representatives of executive and legislative authorities, observing the working process of different state authorities against the background of democratic standards. They expressed satisfaction with the work carried out within this period in and for Armenia.      

Among the questions discussed during those meetings was, according to them, the issue of the implementation of Armenia’s constitutional reforms. The co-rapporteurs underscored the crucial importance of transparency of those reforms, as well as the freedom of media in the country.

According to them, the purpose of the report prepared by them is to be useful to Armenia.  

During the meeting Sargsyan and the PACE co-rapporteurs also touched on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group.
