YEREVAN. - Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan today received the delegation of Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Armenia and Russia, headed by Russia’s Minister of Transport Maxim Sokolov.

Sargsyan welcomed the Russian delegation which has arrived in Armenia to attend in the 16th session of the Commission, stressing that the committee plays significant role in the development of the economic cooperation of both countries.   

According to Sargsyan, nearly thirty international, intergovernmental and interagency documents have been signed and enforced over the half year since the last commission session, supplementing the Armenian-Russian legal and contractual basis. 10 more documents are still being drawn up. 

Referring to the protest over electricity price hike held in Yerevan for the last few days, Armenia’s President said that some experts are trying to look for anti-Russian sentiments in all this. He stressed that he’s happy the protesters themselves confirm the absurdity of those suppositions.

Sargsyan said that Armenia had to make a non-democratic step, considering the inflation level of the Armenian dram and the cost price rise of the energy produced. According to him, the issues on supporting socially vulnerable families by means of subsidizing tariff rise have also been taken into account.

Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan proposed to Maksim Sokolov, Russia’s Minister of Transport and Head of the delegation of Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Armenia and Russia, to conduct audit in Russian-owned Electric Networks of Armenia CJSC.

Responding to the proposal, Maxim Sokolov noted that the audit of the company’s activity will be organized under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Commission, which will involve experts and representatives of all the parties concerned. The audit will be carried out as openly and transparently as possible so that the audit results are clear and unequivocal for everyone.
