YEREVAN. - The internal investigation launched in Armenia’s Police over the incident involving “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” newspaper journalist Ani Gevorgayan has finished after 1,5 years. No case of violence against the journalist and obstructing her work has been confirmed. Circumstances of disciplinary violations on behalf of the policemen have not been substantiated, Ani Gevorgyan told Armenian News – NEWS.am, noting that they expected such an outcome of the case.

“In my opinion, only the innocent can think that the police can investigate their own actions and punish themselves as a result,” she said.

Gevorgyan said they have filed a claim with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on this matter.

On February 12 of last year at about 18:00, the activists of the Armenian National Congress began quarreling with a group of young men when distributing flyers in Yerevan’s Saryan Street prior to a rally to be held on March 1. The activists were later detained and taken to the Central Police Department.

A video footage showing the violence used against journalist Ani Gevorgyan, appeared in the Internet. According to the journalist, the police took away her camera in the police station, while the head of the division hit her. Criminal case has been filed with Armenia’s Investigation Service on the basis of Article 164 and 309(2) of the Armenian Criminal Code.
