The debate in the plenary session of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies on the Resolution of Armenian Genocide is over. The voting will be held tomorrow, European Armenian Federation for Justice & Democracy reports.  

During the debate, the MPs stressed the necessity of acknowledging the Armenian Genocide. MP Jan Penris urged the Turkish government to acknowledge the fact of Armenian Genocide, while Georges Dallemagne stated that the Turks “butchered Christian minorities in Ottoman Empire for homogeneous Turkish state.”

At the hearings, accusations were also addressed to the head of Belgium MFA, since he wasn’t present at the event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Last month Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel on behalf of his government recognized the Armenian Genocide that occurred in the Ottoman Empire one hundred years ago. The Belgian PM said he believes the 1915-1917 events should be “considered a genocide".

The Belgian Senate acknowledged the Armenian Genocide in 1998 by passing a corresponding resolution.
