The 10-year sentence is inessential, Valery Permyakov will be sentenced to life imprisonment, Lusine Sahakya, attorney for the Avetisyan family legal successors, told Armenian News – NEWS.am today, commenting on the verdict of the 5th garrison court of Russia’s North Caucasus Military District. The aforementioned court today sentenced Permyakov to 10 years of imprisonments for walkout and illegal possession of weapons.  

“It’s inessential for us to how many years they are sentencing him over that case. If the court finds him guilty in the other case [as well], he will definitely be convicted to life sentence,” the attorney said after the hearing, held in the territory of the Russian military base in the Armenian city of Gyumri.

Sahakyan called today’s hearing “strange,” since, according to her, considering a case consisting of 72 volumes and taking a decision in a day was “unrealistic.”

Permyakov’s conduct in the court also seemed strange to the attorney: “It seemed the whole litigation process had nothing to do with him.”

The attorney was also surprised by the conclusion of the forensic medical expert examination, according to which Permyakov doesn’t suffer from any disease and is not aggressive. Sahakyan is going to petition for a repeated examination.  

As reported earlier, six members of the Avetisyan family—including a two-year-old girl—were shot dead, and a six-month-old baby was wounded in their house in Gyumri, Armenia, on January 12, The baby boy died in hospital on January 19. Valery Permyakov, a serviceman of the 102nd Russian Military Base in Gyumri, stands accused in this crime.

According to the Agreement between the Russian Federation and Republic of Armenia on issues of jurisdiction and mutual legal aid regarding the presence of the Russian military base in the territory of Armenia (29 August, 1997), the criminal case files on the murder of the Avetisyan family were transferred to the Armenian law enforcement authorities on July 13.
