YEREVAN. – With the new edition of the Constitution of Armenia, the President will become the guarantor of the Constitution of the country.

Constitutional law expert Vardan Poghosyan, who is also a member of the President-affiliated Specialized Committee on Constitutional Reforms, said the abovementioned at Friday’s National Assembly (NA) hearings.

Poghosyan added that the President’s powers also will be conditioned on the Constitution.

Accordingly, the President will see to it that the activities of the NA and the government comply with the Constitution.

In addition, he will be empowered with petitioning to the Constitutional Court (CC) to prevent any possible violations.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, the adopted laws will be submitted to the President for signing. But the President will not be obligated to sign these laws if they conflict with the Constitution.

And if the President of Armenia petitions to the CC, a law will not come into force until the respective ruling by the said court.
