The South Caucasus remains in the limelight of the world developments in the light of energy issues, economic ties, multi-vector policy in the region and alignment of forces, the MP from the Republican parliamentary group (RPA) Artak Zakaryan told the reporters on Monday.

According to him, importance of the region increased due to the Armenia-Russia military agreement. “The world hegemonies, including Russia do not spare efforts for the stable development of the South Caucasus. It accounts for Azerbaijan’s unconstructive and military statements in the region,” Zakaryan stressed, noting Azerbaijani belligerence is intended for domestic policy in most cases.

“Meanwhile, it cannot be said these statements do not pose threat. It’s a fact Azerbaijan increases military expenses year by year,” he emphasized.

Referring to the new agreement prolonging the presence of the Russian base in Armenia for 49 years, the parliamentarian said Armenia-Russia strategic relations, as well as the agreement terms are justified. “The time will come Armenia will need to prolong the agreement, as we do our utmost not to be vulnerable,” Zakaryan said.

As NEWS.am reported previously, Armenia and Russia signed a protocol on the prolongation of the Russian military base in Armenia for 49 years.
