The St. Mary Mother of God Armenian Church, which was consecrated in October last year in the Swedish city of Södertälje, is the first Armenian church in the Scandinavian countries.

Very Reverend Father Yeghishe Avetisian, the Vicarious of Patriarchal Legate to Central Europe in Scandinavia of the Armenian Apostolic Church, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“The [local Armenian] community was able to acquire its own church,” Fr.  Avetisian said. “And the community, which consolidated around it, spared no effort to give the breath of Armenian church-building to the church that was built according to the rules Swedish architecture.”

In his words, Divine Liturgy is celebrated in this Armenian church every Sunday, and baptisms, weddings, and memorial services are also performed.

“We also organize entertainment every Sunday after Mass,” Very Reverend Father Yeghishe Avetisian added. “This Swedish town already has a hospitable community.”

About 1,000 Armenians reside in Södertälje.
