YEREVAN. - President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, who is also the President of the Chess Federation of Armenia, today attended an event dedicated to the 80th anniversary of FIDE Honorary Vice-President and National Academy of Sciences academician, Vanik Zakaryan. The event was held at Tigran Petrosian Chess House in Yerevan.
In the framework of the event, fast chess tournaments with the participation of three generations of Armenian chess players took place. A documentary on Vanik Zakaryan was also screened.
The tournament was followed by an award-giving ceremony.
Serzh Sargsyan highly appreciated Vanik Zakaryan’s merits, as well as his role in the development of chess in Armenia. The President reminded that back in 1990, Vanik Zakaryan was able to find opportunities for teaching chess to children, ensuring serious achievements by them.
Sargsyan also stressed Zakaryan’s achievements in the sphere of science, expressing hope that he will be of befit to chess for still many years.
