YEREVAN. – An Armenian capital city Yerevan court on Friday found Aram Grigoryan guilty of running over and killing Turkish journalist Gaye Coşar with his car in downtown Yerevan, and sentenced him to two years in prison.

The court, however, decided to conditionally not enforce this sentence, and assigned one-year probation.

The prosecution had motioned for a 2.5-year prison sentence. 

The injured party had asked to conditionally not enforce the sentence while the defendant’s attorney had motioned for an acquittal. 

Coşar, who was working in Yerevan within the framework of an Armenian-Turkish project, had died as a result of the aforesaid traffic accident on December 26, 2014.

But Aram Grigoryan had pleaded not guilty, arguing that his car had not exceeded the speed limit prescribed in the given area, and that he had not imagined that someone could have been there.

In his words, this Turkish woman was under the influence of alcohol, and she was lying on the busy side of the street.
