YEREVAN. – In recent days, 15 delivery trucks of tomatoes were imported from Turkey, and this wreaked havoc on the market of tomatoes being grown in Armenia, reported Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper.

“According to our information, the labels stuck on the Turkish tomatoes were replaced with the false Armenian [ones], in Armenia, and they were attempted to be transported to the RF [i.e. the Russian Federation].

“At the Upper Lars checkpoint [at the Georgia-Russia border], however, the Russian side realized the deception, since months ago, this country [i.e. Russia] banned the import of agricultural products from Turkey.

“Furthermore, they subjected the tomatoes to laboratory analysis and found out that they contain large quantities of pesticides, and they sent the consignments back.

 

“[As a result,] the importers had to sell them in the Armenian market, which wreaked havoc on the sales of the products of our greenhouses, [and] which caused the great displeasure of local producers.

 

“According to some information, the imported tomatoes are not cleared from customs,” Haykakan Zhamanak wrote.
