The Maldivian government decided to break off diplomatic relations with Iran which lasted 40 years, explaining that Iran’s policy in the Middle East has a devastating impact on peace and security in the region. According to the AP, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry issued a statement telling that the peace in the Middle East is related with peace, stability, and security in Iran. " The Maldives calls on Iran to demonstrate willingness and tangible results of implementation of the UN recommendations and regulations ," tells the statement, reports RIA Novosti . The agency notes that the country’s decision reflects a close relationship with Saudi Arabia , with whom Iran is a longtime rival. It is also reported that last year the Saudi authorities opened their embassy in the Maldives,  as well as the Saudi government provided subsidies to the Maldivian authorities and began negotiations on investment agreements .
