YEREVAN. – One person is arrested Wednesday along the lines of the criminal case into Tuesday’s violence against police officers in capital city Yerevan.

The Investigative Committee of Armenia informed Armenian News-NEWS.am that Yerevan resident H. Torosyan (born in 1978) is arrested on suspicion of committing a criminal act.

On Tuesday at around 8pm, a group of people at a Yerevan intersection used violence against police officers who were on duty, by throwing stones and other hard objects toward them.

As a result of this violence, six police officers were hospitalized with injuries, and recognized as injured party.

The respective investigation is still in progress.

There were clashes on Tuesday evening, between police and the people, in connection with the police station takeover by an armed group.

A group of armed men stormed into a Yerevan police patrol regiment, on early morning on July 17, and took several police officers hostage. Deputy regiment commander Artur Vanoyan was killed, and four other officers of the law plus one of the attackers were wounded during the ensuing gunfire exchange. 

Negotiations are still underway to release all hostages and end the armed resistance.

The gunmen demand the release of Jirair Sefilian, an imprisoned radical opposition activist.
