YEREVAN. - An internal investigation has been launched in the Internal Security Department of Armenian Police in connection with the actions of the policemen in Yerevan’s Sari Tagh district and Khorenatsi street on July 29-30.

According to the information of Armenian News - NEWS.am, as a result of the internal investigation the powers of Lernik Hovhannisyan, the commander of internal police troops and brother of Armenian Deputy Chief of Police, have been suspended. A number of high-ranking officials, including Yerevan Chief of Police Ashot Karapetyan, have been fined.

On July 30,  Lernik Hovhannisyan, who works in the internal troops, threw a smoke grenade at the protestors in Yerevan’s Sari Tagh district. During all that time, Ashot Karapetyan watched the developments on the ground.

On the same day, the policemen used force against protestors and journalists when dispersing the rally. Consequently, Sayat Harutyunyan, 16, suffered an eye injury, his eye later being removed by the doctors. A number of protestors and journalists sustained bodily injuries.
