YEREVAN. – The number of supporters of Armenia’s joining Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has reduced, whereas those in favor of the country’s joining the European Union (EU) has increased in Armenia, ever since 2014.

Ruben Sargsyan, a sociologist and analyst at the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office, noted the abovementioned at a press conference on Thursday. He stated this while presenting the results of a public opinion poll they have conducted. 

Sargsyan added that this change in public view was the case in all provinces in Armenia, including capital city Yerevan. 

And reflecting on the reasons for such a change, human rights activist Artur Sakunts, director of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office, noted: “In actual fact, the EAEU membership grounds, which were presented, were not implemented. And the [Armenian] community states, with this stance of its, that its [respective] expectations are not met.

“The reasons are economic; [but] security expectations also are not met.”

The Eurasian Economic Union comprises Armenia, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
