The UK appointed Nicholas Hopton -- the current charge d'affairs in Tehran -- as its first ambassador to Iran since relations were severed following the storming of the embassy by students five years ago, Daily Mail reported.

Appointment came a year after resumption of work of the British diplomatic mission in Tehran.

Nicholas Hopton was formerly Britain's ambassador to Qatar, Yemen, and also served in diplomatic missions in Paris and Rome, the MFA noted.

In 2011, the British Embassy in Tehran was attacked by demonstrators protesting against the introduction of sanctions by Western countries against Iran, after which it was closed. Soon after that Iran has also closed the diplomatic mission in London.

Since then, the UK's interests in Iran were represented by Embassy of Sweden. Work of the British diplomatic mission in Tehran was resumed only on August 23, 2015, the Embassy of Iran in London also opened last year.
