Malta's famous Azure Window, 28-meter high limestone cliff, located in the west of Gotso island, collapsed because of storms. The rock was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Malta's Prime Minister Joseph Muscat described the news as “heartbreaking”, reports BBC. "This is a sad day," wrote Muscat.
Note, that research conducted in 2013 showed that although the erosion was inevitable, there was no immediate threat to its collapse. However, as the recent years’ reports concluded, the cliff suffered much erosion anyway.
