Leader of Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu commenced a 24-day march from Ankara to Istanbul in protest of the detention of CHP deputy Enis Berberoğlu, Hurriyet reports.
The 450 km march stared on Friday in central Güvenpark of Ankara. According to Kılıçdaroğlu, he will need 24 days to reach Istanbul. At the same time, the supporters of the opposition leader’s party are staging protests in 81 provinces of Turkey.
“We do not want any journalists or any lawmakers to be in jail in our country. We are facing a dictatorial [regime]. We don’t want to live in a country where there is no justice,” he said.
Berberoğlu was sentenced to 25 years in prison on June 14 on charges of “leaking state secrets.” It is claimed that he handed to press video materials, which show the Turkish National Intelligence Agency (MİT) supply weapons to Syria.
