YEREVAN. – The Special Investigation Service (SIS) of Armenia on Thursday granted the petition by the legal defender of Samvel Mayrapetyan and permitted the businessman to leave the country, his attorney, Karen Batikyan, told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

He noted that physicians on Wednesday held another consultation and decided that Mayrapetyan’s medical treatment cannot be carried out in Armenia.

His attorney had submitted this new medical conclusion to the SIS, and as an additional document.

Batikyan said his client will immediately leave for Germany where his medical treatment will be conducted.

On January 17, the European Court of Human Rights instructed the Armenian government to urgently ensure medical assistance corresponding to Samvel Mayrapetyan’s health condition, and in accordance with respective instructions by physicians.

Mayrapetyan was remanded in custody on charges of mediation to bribe-taking, and a criminal charge was brought against him.
