Transitional justice can’t be a tool for vendetta. This is what Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalyan told journalists.

According to him, the term ‘transitional justice’, that is, seizure of assets without a verdict, can be misleading. “However, substantively speaking, this concerns the seizure of illegally obtained assets. Armenia has joined international treaties, and this is part of the country’s commitments. Moreover, Armenia joined the treaties during one of the terms of the previous governments,” the minister recalled.

Zeynalyan stated that there is a group developing a law and that the issue of transitional justice is at the level of the National Assembly. “The Ministry of Justice has conducted a study. The literature and materials have been delivered to the National Assembly. There are different models and approaches for different situations. There are no universal solutions,” Zeynalyan said, adding that transitional justice can’t be a tool for vendetta. According to him, it is a measure for reconciliation. He also stated that Armenia is open for cooperation with European experts.
