There are still mine risks in four provinces of Armenia, including Tavush, Syunik, Gegharkunik and Vayots Dzor.

Based on the data provided by the Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise, the total surface area of the territories with a mine risk is more than 17,000,000 square kilometers, and there are nearly 35,000 people living right near that area.

Over the past decades, over 700 people have become victims of incidents linked to mine risk. Based on the data of November 2018, there are 123 potentially dangerous areas in Armenia, and 10 (with a 209,689 square kilometers) have been demined. Besides working within the boundaries of Armenia, the Center’s deminers have been carrying out humanitarian demining in Syria since February 8. Doctors also work with the deminers as part of the humanitarian mission in Aleppo and provide medical assistance at four hospitals.

The United Nations has declared the 4th of April as International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. Every year, about 10,000 people die from mine explosions, and another 20,000 people receive injuries, and a third of them are children.
