There is nothing extraordinary about the fact that the Moon will come closer to the Earth, it is a usual process, said the Armenian expert.

Talking to the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent, head of the Byurakan observatory Hayk Harutunyan noted that it will be difficult to notice the phenomenon without special equipment. “It will coincide with the full moon, but people will hardly notice any changes in its size,” he said adding perigee will not be seen in Armenia due to cloudy weather. He also noted the phenomenon will not be accompanied with certain processes on the Earth, except for tides.  

The expert stressed the Moon comes closer to the Earth 5-6 times a century, whereas today’s phenomenon is the first in 21th century. The Moon came closest to the Earth in 1912, 1938, in 1950s and 1975, he added.

Rare phenomenon will be observed from Saturday to Sunday. The Moon will be about 31,000 miles from the Earth. This year a full moon will coincide with a perigee.  

Phenomenon, often called “supermoon” provoked heated debates about its impact on the Earth. Some scientists expect troubles remembering all sorts of natural disasters that occurred in the past. Their opponents believe there is nothing supernatural about it and one should not link it to natural disasters.
