Indian authorities have detained over 500 people, including representatives of local parties, in the abolished state of Jammu and Kashmir, TASS reports referring to All India Radio.

According to the report, most residents remain at home due to increased security measures.

Earlier, ANI reported that Indian PM Narendra Modi on Thursday will address the nation in connection with the situation in the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.

On August 7, Pakistani authorities decided to expel the Indian Ambassador after the abolition of the state was announced in New Delhi. Islamabad also announced its intention to lower the level of diplomatic relations and suspend bilateral trade with India.

On August 5, New Delhi announced a decision to abolish the state of Jammu and Kashmir and create two union territories in this region. Parliament approved the abolition of Article 370 of the constitution, which gave the state special status.

According to the constitution of India, Jammu and Kashmir had a special autonomy as all laws there adopted by the central government (with the exception of the defense, foreign relations, and some others) had to be approved by the local assembly. Residents of other regions of India did not have the right to buy land there. Jammu and Kashmir had their own flag and a number of other advantages.
