YEREVAN. - The Armenian ex-premier, Rector of Russian-Armenian Slavonic University Armen Darbinyan doubts a nuclear power plant (NPP) is absolute necessary in Armenia.

Darbinyan proposes replacing the NPP with wind-power and solar stations. The disaster in Japan is an occasion to think over domestic problems, he added.

“Even Japan, a country with progressive technologies, failed to prevent that terrible disaster or withstand it,” Darbinyan said.

According to him, given the situation in the world, the statements that “everything`s all right” in Armenia sound strange.

“Things being so, we suddenly claim everything`s all right with us,” Darbinyan mentioned. “How can we guarantee that if we do not own either technologies or the generating units? It is not quite clear either. I find it hard to believe.”

He said that Armenia is a country in need of technological development, whereas the Armenian NPP`s operating period “cannot by any means be called a period of scientific and technical development in this field.”

In an interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am earlier this week, Armenian Minister of Energy Armen Movsisyan stated Armenia will not stop using nuclear energy even after the disaster in Japan.
