The Russian military and mercenaries are destabilizing the situation in Libya, DW reported referring to the US State Department’s statement.

The US is committed to achieving a safe and prosperous future for the Libyan people, he said adding that to make this a reality, we need real commitments from outside forces to stop the incitement to violence.

Russia's military intervention threatens the peace, security and stability of Libya, said US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs David Schenker at a briefing in Washington.

He pointed to the presence in Libya in significant numbers of Russian regular troops and fighters of the Wagner private military company. They are deployed in this country to support the Libyan National Army, General Khalifa Haftar, which is incredibly destabilizing the situation, said Schenker.

According to the assistant to the head of the US MFA, Washington calls on its partners to impose sanctions on Wagner. This would be a sign that they are also concerned about the presence of Russian mercenaries in third countries, he stressed.

Libyan General Khalifa Haftar has been attacking Tripoli since April. According to the UN, more than a thousand people have died in the months since the start of the operation. The 75-year-old general previously belonged to the associates of the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who came to power after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1969 and killed by rebels in 2011.
