Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences over the death of Soviet intelligence agent Gohar Vardanyan, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters Wednesday, TASS reports.

"Putin expressed his condolences to Gohar Vardanyan's relatives and friends of our well-known intelligence agent," Peskov said. “Without Gohar Vardanyan, without her husband, Gevorg, our history of peace could have gone the other way. They are people who have left their mark on the history of mankind."

"Putin was well acquainted with both Gohar and her husband," Peskov added. "After her husband's death, Gohar came to Putin, the Kremlin, Putin has visited her. This is a grave loss."

Gohar Vardanyan had died at the age of 94.
