The current president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, was on the way to re-election for a second term, according to the results of preliminary vote counts following the presidential election in the country, AFP reported.

According to the independent electoral commission, Ghani won 50.64% of the vote, breaking away from his main political opponent Abdullah Abdullah, who won 39.52% of the vote.

Abdullah’s office said that immediately after the official publication of the results of the presidential elections held on September 28 of this year, they will protest this decision.

However, the commission insists that it honestly performed its duty during the election.
