Mexican FM Marcelo Ebrard said that the Mexican ambassador to Argentina, Oscar Ricardo Valero Recio Becerra, 76, who was caught stealing Casanova’s biography from a bookstore, has quit due to health reasons and is undergoing neurological treatment, RIA Novosti reported.

At the beginning of December, the ambassador was detained by guards while trying to get a biography of Giacomo Casanova from the bookstore worth less than $ 10. The story hit the local media, which showed videos of the incident filmed by surveillance cameras.

Ebrard recalled Valero to Mexico, after which the details of the health status of the elderly diplomat became known.

Valero was appointed ambassador to Mexico in March 2019. He was ambassador to Chile in 2001-2004.
