A Turkish court has sentenced seven journalists to different types of punishment under the charge of supporting the movement of Islam preacher Fetullah Gulen, whom Ankara considers the organizer of the 2016 Turkish coup d’état attempt.

They are accused of supporting the coup d’état through Sozcu newspaper, which extremely criticized the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. They deny the charges and intend to appeal the verdicts, reports AP.

Commentators Emin Kolasan and Nekati Dogru have been sentenced to 3 years and 6 months, the newspaper’s editor-in-chief Metin Yilmaz and managing editor of the online version of the newspaper Mustafa Tsetin have been sentenced to imprisonment for a term less than 3 years, and editor of online news Yucel Ari, financial manager Yonka Yucelan and journalist Gokmen Ulu have been sentenced to 2 years in prison.

The syndicate of Turkish journalists reports that there are at least 108 journalists or media representatives in jail.
