Germany wants stable ties with China and increased access to the Chinese market for foreign companies, AP reported referring to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel's remarks during a video call with Chinese PM Li Keqiang.

Merkel highlighted Germany’s interest in "rules-based and free multilateral trade."

She also noted Germany’s desire to “strengthen the World Trade Organization and in stable bilateral relations” with China.

During the call, Merkel raised the issue of the COVID-19 outbreak, the situation in Hong Kong, and the human rights situation.

The Chancellor "noted the need for further steps on market access, reciprocity and equal treatment for foreign companies" in China.

"The conclusion of an ambitious investment agreement between the EU and China would be an important element there," Merkel's office reported.
