US President Trump has demanded Tokyo pay $8 billion annually for troops, Kyodo reported referring to the new book of former White House advisor John Bolton.
Bolton wrote that during his trip to Japan in July 2019, he conveyed Trump's request to a senior Japanese government official.
Trump, the book says, ordered his advisor to threaten the complete withdrawal of US troops from Japan if it refuses to increase its costs of maintaining the bases.
According to Bolton, when he returned to Washington and talked with Trump, the president said that "the way to get the $8 and $5 billion annual payments, respectively, was to threaten to withdraw all U.S. forces."
Bolton was fired from his post last September. His memoirs are set to be published on June 23.
