Deputy Director of the Institute of Political and Military Analysis, military expert Alexander Khramchikhin told Armenian News-NEWS.am that Russia doesn’t want a war on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border since Armenia, Russia’s ally, is on one side, and Azerbaijan, Russia’s close partner, is on the other side.

“I can’t say what arguments Russia will present as a mediator, but one thing is for sure — Russia, by declaring to invest its efforts for mediation to settle the conflict, wants to prevent large-scale military operations. At the same time, Russia also doesn’t want to support any particular side when it comes to direct military operations, but it can’t interfere because the escalation of the situation is on Armenia’s border, not Karabakh, and Russia can’t stay away from this,” he stated.

As for Ankara’s statement to support Azerbaijan and Russia’s allied commitments in case of large-scale military operations on Armenia’s border, according to the military expert, both Turkey and Russia wouldn’t want to ruin their relations. However, Khramchikhin didn’t rule out the fact that the players in the region might leave Armenia and Azerbaijan alone in case of large-scale military operations.

Commenting on the statement of the Collective Security Treaty Organization to postpone the special session of the Permanent Council for an indefinite period, the expert stated that holding a session in this situation would be inappropriate.

As far as the current silence on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border is concerned, Khramchikhin said the ceasefire will continue in this stage, even though a war can break out at any moment.
