German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas arrived in Tripoli on an unannounced visit, saying that the world should not be fooled by the 'deceptive calm' in Libya at the moment, the AP reported.

During the visit, he met with officials of the UN-recognized government of Libya to "talk about ways out of this very dangerous situation."

Germany tried to mediate and held a summit in Berlin in January where participants from both sides agreed to abide by the arms embargo and push Libyan warring parties towards a complete ceasefire, but the agreement was repeatedly violated.

Maas is to travel to Abu Dhabi later to meet with his counterpart to persuade him to use the UAE's influence on General Khalifa Hafter in line with the Berlin summit.

"Only those who take part in a political process will be part of Libya’s future," Maas noted.
