Azerbaijani mass media outlets are disseminating a staged video showing captured Armenian officer Gurgen Alaverdyan ‘confessing’.

In the video that was posted on several Azerbaijani websites through the efforts of relevant state institutions in Azerbaijan, Senior Lieutenant Gurgen Alaverdyan says he was born on August 14, 1989 in the city of Martuni of Gegharkuni Province and has been serving as an officer in the Armed Forces of Armenia since 2015.

Alaverdyan reiterates the expression ‘seized Karvachar’ a few times and informs that he and his commander Vazgen Vardanyan ‘have conducted sabotage attacks’.

He also regrets having served ‘in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan’ and that ‘there are many people like him’ in the Armed Forces of Armenia. “I would like to stay in this country and help Azerbaijan,” Alaverdyan says, adding that ‘the Armenians have no chance of winning’.

There is no sense in rewriting Alaverdyan’s ‘confession’ since if one looks at his face closely, one can conclude that he is reading a text and is mumbling from time to time.

It has already been reported that the Azerbaijani authorities have instituted a criminal case against Alaverdyan under five articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. Apparently, the authorities still haven’t decided whether they should present Alaverdyan as a saboteur or as a person who crossed over to the enemy’s side. The only thing left to affirm is that the Azerbaijani authorities refuse to fulfill their international obligations with regard to captives and detainees.
