German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas agreed with his Israeli counterpart that efforts should be made to extend the arms embargo against Iran while emphasizing that Germany still sees in the historic 2015 deal between Tehran and world powers the best way to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons, Associated Press reported.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi told reporters during a meeting in Berlin that the extension of the arms embargo against Iran is necessary to prevent this country from receiving “more advanced weapons systems and spreading them around the Middle East.”

“We would like to see the European countries, not just Germany, preventing it,” he said. “It's not helpful for the stability of the region.”

In turn, Maas said that the US wants a full extension of the arms embargo against Iran, which will almost certainly be blocked by Russia and China in the UN Security Council.

Germany and other countries are currently trying to find some kind of mediation platform that would be approved by Russia and China so that it would not be vetoed by the United States in the UN Security Council.
