The Russian Orthodox Church is ready to continue to participate in talks between the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Office of Muslims of the Caucasus to prevent the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh from turning into a confrontation between Islam and Christianity, said Hilarion Alfeyev, the chairman of the Department of External Church Relations.

He noted that for many years the Russian Orthodox Church acted as a mediator in talks between the head of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Caucasus and the head of the Armenian Church, Russia 24 reported.

According to him, trilateral talks continued throughout this conflict as it was important not to let this conflict develop into an inter-religious conflict.

“This is a conflict that arose on political grounds, at its core is a territorial dispute, and this conflict cannot be allowed to develop into a confrontation between Christianity and Islam. The Russian Orthodox Church is now ready to participate in this peacekeeping mission and contribute to the peaceful settlement of this conflict,” he said.
