During a teleconference, Leading Researcher at the MGIMO Institute for International Studies Sergei Markedonov said he wouldn’t accept the ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone as the end of the story.

“Many people thought the conflict has been settled since a ceasefire had been established after nine hours of negotiations. If it hasn’t been settled for almost 30 years, why are people confident that it can be settled in a day?” he stated.

The analyst emphasized that the whole history of conflicts and peacekeeping processes includes the establishment and violations of ceasefires.

“Russia is already taking steps, and It is currently taking diplomatic steps. Russia is interested in the military conflict, especially the internationalization of this conflict and the involvement of third countries. Russia has already faced a similar threat in the North Caucasus, and this is why all this is very serious and dangerous to simply follow. Here there is a problem that is also characteristic of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and I am referring to active efforts in the information field. During the first weeks, people got the impression that Moscow was keeping silent, but this is not the case. Diplomatic efforts are often concealed. Russia attaches importance to its relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan. It is important for Moscow to return to diplomacy. The foreign ministers had been interacting remotely since April, then there was escalation in July, Azerbaijan’s foreign minister was dismissed, and the diplomats changed. The return to diplomacy is great, but we need to be patient,” Markedonov added and noted that the meeting of the Prime Ministers of the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union in Yerevan was held mainly under the influence of those events.
