Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova says Russia’s main message is that it is necessary to host a meeting with military men to agree on a mechanism to control the ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.

She recalled that the Russian foreign minister thoroughly covered this topic in his interview with Russian presses yesterday.

“As far as we know, efforts haven’t been made in this direction to date. We hope the mechanism is launched as soon as possible,” Zakharova stated. “As far as the prospects for a political settlement are concerned, we believe it is possible and necessary. The proposals that have been and are still being developed by the Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group remain on the negotiating table, and the content is the following: gradual liberation of the corresponding regions, under the condition of security guarantees and reliable communication between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh before a decision on its ultimate status,” she said.

“Each of the sides is making a tremendous amount of statements, most of which are emotional, and this is understandable, but the sides should always ask themselves if this is helping achieve a certain goal. I reiterate and stress once again that the goal is ceasefire and a transition to the negotiation process. In this regard, Russia hopes for a settlement of the situation, not deterioration of the situation,” Zakharova added.
