Vice-Chairs of the Germany-South Caucasus Parliamentary Friendship Group of the German Bundestag Till Mansmann (Free Democratic Party) and Albert Weiler (CDU) have addressed Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel with an open letter.
In their letter, they call on Merkel to impose sanctions against President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, as well as other politicians of Azerbaijan.
“We refer to the violations of humanitarian law by Azerbaijan that have led to a humanitarian disaster in Nagorno-Karabakh.
In an interview with German public television in late October, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev stated that the purpose of the war unleashed by him is to displace the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. This is ethnic cleansing which must be condemned as a war crime.
At the same time, banned cluster munitions have been used against the civilian population of Nagorno-Karabakh, videos of the execution and beheading of Armenian prisoners of war have been demonstratively shown. Syrian extremist mercenaries have been promised $100 for each beheaded Armenian. Freeze of accounts, ban on entry into the EU, ban on using European airlines, as well as breach of deals with German and European banks must be applied as sanctions," the letter reads.
