Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev promised to conduct a thorough investigation and punish those responsible for the attack on the Russian helicopter, TASS reported.

His remarks came at a meeting with the defense ministry leadership, heads of federal departments, and defense industry enterprises.

Putin instructed defense minister Sergey Shoygu to assist the families of soldiers killed in Karabakh as a result of an attack on a Russian helicopter.

Putin and the participants in the defense meeting observed a minute of silence in memory of the crew downed in the skies of Armenia on Monday.

A Russian Mi-24 helicopter was shot down over Armenia near the border with Azerbaijan on November 9. Two crew members were killed and another was injured. The Azerbaijani MFA admitted that the helicopter was shot down by the republic's armed forces by mistake, and said that Baku was ready to pay compensation to Moscow.
