YEREVAN. – There is no need to cancel the martial law regime in Armenia yet Lena Nazaryan, deputy speaker of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia and member of its majority My Step faction, said this during Thursday’s briefings in the NA.

According to her, the government and the ruling My Step bloc had made the decision to declare martial law based on the assessment of the situation. "Now there is no signal from the government that it should be canceled," Nazaryan added.

Therefore, according to the NA vice-speaker, the ruling faction will not participate in the NA Council meeting which the parliamentary opposition convenes to hold a special NA session. "Our position is that we are against that initiative," Lena Nazaryan stressed.

To note, the opposition factions in parliament have repeatedly tried to convene a special session of the NA to debate on the matter of lifting the current martial law, after which it will be possible to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

On November 9, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a joint statement on a complete cessation of hostilities in and around Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Accordingly, Russian peacekeepers will be deployed in the region to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities. But this statement also stipulates the handover of part of Artsakh lands to Azerbaijan.
