YEREVAN. - Release of convicts in March 1, 2008 case is not merely opposition’s victory, but that of Armenian newly formed civil society, whole Armenian people and, ultimately, that of Armenian State, announced the head of Armenian National Congress, former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan in his speech at opposition rally.
According to him, the victory was not achieved through conspiracy. It was the result of public dialogue between ANC and the authorities.
“Talks about the display of good will on behalf of the authorities and their intensions in terms of serious reforms are irrelevant. There is no place for illusions in this regard. Concessions were made exclusively out of cold-headed calculations and with clear understanding of the hopeless socio-economic situation in the country. This is far more important from political point of view than good will manifestation, because it objectively indicates that for the first time in three year period the authorities have displayed some sense of realism. This step must be appreciated. Let us hope the sense of realism will not abandon the officials again, especially in the face of forthcoming complex dialogue with ANC,” said Levon Ter-Petrosyan.
