The Central African Republic has declared a 15-day state of emergency as a coalition of militant groups seeks to topple newly re-elected President Faustin-Archange Touadera, AP reported.

The presidential spokesman said the state of emergency is valid until February 4.

Last week, rebels launched an attack near the capital Bangui but were repelled by UN peacekeeping forces. The UN mission has requested additional troops from the UN Security Council.

A coalition of militias demands Touadera's resignation. He was re-elected on December 27.

Militias claiming to represent ethnic or other groups control two-thirds of the country's territory.
