President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin today signed a law on extending the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START or CHB-3) for five years, as reported on the Kremlin’s website.

The Russia-US CHB-3 agreement entered into force on February 5, 2011. By the agreement, each of the parties shall reduce its nuclear arsenals in such a way that the total quantity of arms doesn’t exceed 700 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), deployed submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) and deployed heavy bombers (HBs), as well as 1,550 warheads and 800 deployed and non-deployed ICBM and SLBM launchers and HBs.
